The GATE program at Hancock Elementary includes a regular 4th and 5th grade daily math class. The students in these classes are taught the curriculum at their grade level as well as some content from the grade level above. Integration and technology is used as often as possible and when appropriate. Much of the curriculum is taught using a problem solving approach.
Students in the 5th grade were posed with a problem in their geometry unit: A video game company wanted to find the best possible net for a triangular prism shaped video game. Students worked in groups using Geo Fix to determine the best most cost-effective net. See the letter and document below as an example of the student work.
